Editorial Policy

PermitRules is committed to providing accurate, reliable building permit information for homeowners across the United States. This editorial policy describes our standards for sourcing, reviewing, and maintaining the permit data on this site.

Data Sources and Research Process

All permit data on PermitRules is sourced from official government publications including city building department websites, municipal codes and ordinances, county building division publications, and published permit fee schedules. We do not use user-submitted data, forum posts, or unverified third-party sources as primary references. Our research team cross-references multiple official sources for each city to ensure consistency and accuracy.

For each city we cover, our researchers review the following official documents: the city's residential building permit application page, the published fee schedule for building permits, the zoning ordinance (for setback distances, height limits, and lot coverage rules), and any published guides or FAQs for homeowners on the city building department website. When official sources conflict or are ambiguous, we note this in the additional notes section of the relevant permit page.

Review and Update Schedule

Our research team reviews permit data on a rolling basis to ensure information remains current. High-traffic cities including Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago are reviewed quarterly. All other cities in our database are reviewed at least annually. Each permit page displays a "Data last verified" date showing when the information was most recently confirmed against official sources. When we identify changes to permit requirements, fee schedules, or zoning rules, we update our database and regenerate affected pages immediately.

Corrections Policy

When errors are identified — whether by our team or reported by users — we investigate immediately and update our data within 48 hours of confirming the correction. We maintain a corrections log and review patterns in reported errors to improve our research process. To report an error, email hello@permitrules.com with the page URL, the data you believe is incorrect, and a link to the official source showing the correct information.

Content Standards

Every permit page on PermitRules includes: the permit requirement status (required, not required, or conditional), size thresholds that trigger permit requirements, setback distances from property lines, typical permit fee ranges, additional notes specific to the city, and links to official city resources. We aim to provide enough detail for homeowners to understand their obligations before contacting the building department, while clearly stating that official verification is always necessary.
